Summary of Position:

This is a travel opportunity with an established healthcare organization in the greater New York City area. The Pathologists’ Assistant will provide temporary maternity leave coverage as part of a collaborative pathology team. The role will focus on surgical pathology operations, specimen gross examination, accurate documentation, and supporting efficient daily laboratory workflows.

The assignment is currently expected to run for approximately four months, with the final end date being finalized based on the maternity leave coverage timeline.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program.
• ASCP Pathologists’ Assistant certification or eligibility with certification obtained within 6 months.
• Previous Pathologists’ Assistant experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting preferred.
• Active New York State Pathologists’ Assistant license strongly preferred.
• Candidates without an active NYS license may be considered; however, candidates requiring licensure must be able to initiate the process immediately due to potentially extended licensing timelines.
• Strong knowledge of surgical pathology specimen handling, gross examination, and dissection.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and voice dictation technology is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform detailed gross examination, dissection, and description of a variety of surgical pathology specimens.
• Ensure proper specimen identification, integrity, labeling, and documentation throughout the pathology workflow.
• Prepare and submit appropriate tissue sections for histologic processing and ancillary studies.
• Accurately document gross findings and communicate pertinent findings to pathologists and other members of the pathology team.
• Photograph gross specimens and maintain accurate image records as required.
• Work collaboratively with pathologists, residents, medical students, histotechnologists, and other laboratory personnel.
• Maintain efficient specimen workflow while adhering to established laboratory protocols.
• Participate in departmental quality assurance and quality control initiatives.
• Follow established laboratory procedures and applicable CAP requirements to promote accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic services.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant grossing environment.
