Job Title: Pathologists’ Assistant, travel
Job Location: Largo, FL

Shift: Day Shift, M-F 9am-5:30pm

Dates: January start (ASAP) – 13 week assignment!

Description: This day-shift travel assignment on Florida’s Gulf Coast offers the opportunity to support a busy hospital laboratory with a high-volume, breast-focused surgical pathology caseload—approximately 60–80% complex cases. The assignment does not require frozen sections or autopsies, allowing the PA to focus fully on high-quality grossing. They are seeking an experienced Pathologists’ Assistant who can step in quickly, work independently, and contribute immediately to a fast-paced, well-organized service..
Qualifications:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological or a health science discipline required
  • Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program preferred; equivalent experience may be considered
  • ASCP certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA-ASCP)
  • At least 3-5 years experience as a certified PA
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, pathology terminology, and laboratory practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Key Responsibilities 
  • Responsible for the organization of and efficiency of workflow processes in the gross examination areas.
  • Work closely with on-site Pathologists in determining grossing priorities.
  • Take instruction from on-site Pathologists with respect to grossing technique and quality assessment.
  • Confer with and share with other pathologist assistant’s relevant information that would facilitate productivity and expand knowledge base.
  • Triage specimen received from surgery; dictate gross findings on selected specimen using appropriate terminology; refer tissue sections for microscopic review by Pathologist or Resident.
  • Select and identify tissue for microscopic study; determine proper fixative solutions in which tissue will be maintained.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as decalcification; maintain and coordinate specimen and records for specialized procedures using appropriate protocols; submit request for special histological procedures and special stains when appropriate.
  • Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; assist in the compilation of reports for surgical pathology; label and store gross tissue specimen.
  • Photograph specimen samples as appropriate for use in instruction and documentation. Perform photo microscopy on cases considered for interdepartmental conferences or for teaching purposes; maintain complete and accurate records of all gross and microscopic photographs.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
