Position Summary: 
The Pathologists’ Assistant supports the surgical and autopsy pathology services by performing gross examination, dissection, specimen preparation, and assisting in frozen section procedures. This role also provides operational and quality support for the dissection suite, autopsy, and mortuary services, ensuring compliance with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards.

 

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program.
  • ASCP certification (PA(ASCP)cm) required.
    • Within 6 months if new graduate.
  • Prior experience in grossing complex surgical cases, frozen sections, and/or autopsy procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of CAP, CLIA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor laboratory staff and students.

Key Responsibilities: 
  • Perform gross dissection, description, and tissue submission for routine and complex surgical specimens.
  • Assist in intraoperative consultations and frozen sections.
  • Train and mentor pathology residents and grossing technologists in complex specimen handling.
  • Maintain laboratory workflow, cleanliness, equipment, and supply inventory.
  • Ensure quality control and compliance with safety, infection control, and regulatory standards.
  • Verify legal authorization, perform autopsies under pathologist supervision, and document findings and specimen collection.
  • Coordinate communications with physicians, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and families regarding autopsy and decedent care.
  • Occasionally assist with morgue operations, including accessioning, documentation, and release procedures in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain and update departmental policies, QC records, and procedure manuals to ensure CAP and Joint Commission compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and data collection for quality metrics.
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and patient-centered care in all pathology operations.
