Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Cytologist (CT(ASCP)) to join our dynamic anatomic pathology laboratory. This position is responsible for the accurate microscopic evaluation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, including high-volume Pap test screening, as well as supporting molecular diagnostics workflows related to cytology. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, strong diagnostic skills, and a commitment to quality patient care.
Essential Responsibilities
Cytology
- Screen and evaluate gynecologic (Pap) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens in accordance with CLIA workload standards.
- Identify and accurately classify benign, atypical, premalignant, and malignant cellular abnormalities.
- Mark and refer abnormal or suspicious cases to the pathologist for final interpretation.
- Participate in rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) for fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, when applicable.
- Prepare cytology specimens using ThinPrep®, SurePath®, cytocentrifugation, and other approved preparation methods.
- Correlate cytology findings with available clinical and histologic information when appropriate.
Molecular & Ancillary Testing
- Review and coordinate reflex HPV testing based on established laboratory protocols.
- Assist with specimen triage for molecular diagnostic testing, including HPV, cervical cancer screening algorithms, and other molecular assays.
- Verify specimen adequacy and ensure appropriate documentation before molecular testing.
- Collaborate with molecular laboratory personnel and pathologists to facilitate accurate and timely testing.
- Support quality assurance activities related to molecular testing workflows and specimen integrity.
- Participate in cytology quality assurance programs, including rescreening, discrepancy review, and cytologic-histologic correlation.
- Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and all laboratory accreditation standards.
- Document quality control activities and participate in laboratory inspections and competency assessments.
- Maintain proficiency through continuing education and professional development.
- Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology or a related laboratory science.
- Graduate of an accredited Cytotechnology program.
- Current CT(ASCP) certification required.
- State licensure, where applicable.
- Minimum of 2 years of cytology experience preferred.
- Experience with high-volume Pap screening preferred.
- Familiarity with HPV testing, molecular specimen workflows, and cervical cancer screening guidelines preferred.
- Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and digital pathology platforms is a plus.
- Strong proficiency in gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology.
- Thorough understanding of The Bethesda System for cervical cytology reporting.
- Knowledge of HPV testing methodologies and molecular diagnostic workflows.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to prioritize workload while maintaining high levels of accuracy and productivity.
